And, when I looked up to his face I realized I was given a gift to see

Fear can cause us to turn away before we take the time to see. We notice someone who makes us uncomfortable and instinctively create distance. But every time we turn away, the distance between us grows. Eventually, the distance becomes so great that we no longer see the person at all. We see only our judgment of them. Sometimes seeing another human being begins with refusing to turn away.

Lyrics

VERSE 1

Welcome one Welcome all To a magical kingdom Where stars are called

Keep your head up

Keep your spirits up Don't look down at the street And see a truth that is bleak

PRE-CHORUS 1

The polish and the shine Meant to conceal the grime No longer shrouds the reality Of life underneath the fantasy

CHORUS

What have we done What have we become Where is the care Where is the share Why do so many have no home Why do so many have to roam And, when I looked up to his face I realized I was given a gift to see A homeless angel under God's grace

VERSE 2

To forget one To forget all And the magical kingdom Begins its final fall

Look down and see the ground

Look down and see it can be found That what at first looks so bleak Hides a truth born in the street

PRE-CHORUS 2

The shine is not from polish And the grime is not a finish And though we enjoy the fantasy We feel the heartbreaking reality

CHORUS

What have we done What have we become Where is the care Where is the share Why do so many have no home Why do so many have to roam And, when I looked up to his face I realized I was given a gift to see A homeless angel under God's grace

BRIDGE

What have we done to ourselves When a simple "thank you" Makes another stop and pause To look upon you, as The Wizard of Oz

OUTRO

I will remember his face A favorite memory of grace The homeless angel I once met And the awe, as if I lifted a debt
